Soulforce is birthed out of the legacies of generations of human rights defenders.

Soulforce has been training our spirits and bodies in the ways of disobedience and resistance for almost 30 years now, and we come out of the legacies of human rights defenders for generations and generations. The chaos we feel inside is a reflection of the chaos that's happening in our country, and it is not by coincidence or mistake. The opposition is depending on us being so overwhelmed that we get stuck in a crisis response mode of flight, freeze, fight, or fawn. Whatever we need to do to get ourselves out of a freeze or fawn response now is the time to do it!

The Far Right that is now in power demonizes anyone who is different from them, with Trans people and Trans-serving organizations being at the front of the list. We can no longer depend on foundations, elected officials, and social safety nets. If we want our people to be free, we have to do it ourselves. And that means we also have to fund the work ourselves. We have seen massive budget cuts and many people being laid off from work or furloughed; as a result, many organizations have shut down. Soulforce is determined to stay the course. We have the people, we have the path forward, and we have the will.

Will you help us fund the work?

Work that has never been stronger, to be honest. We are committed, and we will not be silent! We are naming the ideologies of white Christian Supremacy and Spiritual Violence that are happening all around us in real time.

• We have a podcast on Queer and Latinx theology from an activist lens,
• We have theological resources that push back on ideologies of domination in the name of god,
• We are training more and more clinicians, social workers, and psychologists on how to support our community at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and religion,
• We are creating resources for Spiritual healing and reclamation, and
• We are strategizing and taking notes from our siblings in the Global South who have long resisted empire.

Sometimes we may no longer be able to be on the front lines of protests; sometimes we support the movement in other ways, such as making a gift to the organizations that we trust to help us survive this moment and usher forth a new vision for the future, one in which justice and wholeness are prioritized as basic human rights. It is our deep hope that Soulforce is part of your resistance plan. We can't do this without you by our side, so whatever it is that helps you remember to resist and not to preemptively acquiesce to a status quo that is killing us, hold on to that.

For us here at Soulforce, one of those symbols is the toothbrush. This past year, one of our amazing first-generation Soulforcers sent us a sweet note with a disposable toothbrush. She told us the story of how she had received this toothbrush when she spent the night in jail after protesting with Soulforce in Florida more than two decades ago. She saved it all these years as a reminder: that she was brave and she is worthy of equality and justice, and that she is not in this work of struggle and liberation alone.

Whatever your toothbrush is, find it and hold it close, and above all: remember that you are part of a generations-long movement where so many people work together and believe in what is possible if we center the spiritual disciplines of love, justice, hope, and healing.
